CBS Chief Exec Les Moonves is on the road to the future of television, and it leads to revenue. In an article posted yesterday on Television Broadcast, Moonves shared his vision for expanding revenue beyond the traditional TV advertising model with broadcast retransmission fees and Internet TV monetization. The number one television network is projecting more than $100 million in retrans revenue in 2010, growing to $250 million in just two years, according to the article.
Retransmission fees come from the CBS’s 14 owned-and-operated affiliates, as well as a slice of the retrans revenue generated by other affiliates. With Skitter.TV, network affiliates see new retrans revenue from multiscreen TV services offered by Skitter’s telecom service provider partners. Traditionally, retrans revenue came solely from agreements with cable TV operators.
Moonves understands the potential of multiplatform revenue, citing it as a part of the network’s emerging revenue diversification strategy. Television Broadcast quotes Monnves on his perspective on Internet video:
“If you are smart about using the Internet properly… as long as we’re getting paid, and we’re able to control our content in that way, it’s going to be a real positive for us.”
We at Skitter see a similar future. A key part of our strategy is to partner with broadcasters and other entertainment content owners to ensure that their monetization strategies are supported within the Skitter.TV environment. In fact, we are committed to expanding revenue opportunities for the entertainment industry via enhanced advertising and merchandising opportunities. Of course, this comes with a commitment to protecting content with video stream encryption and control over content access, down to the individual subscriber.
Skitter is actively working to develop partnerships with content owners and distributors to ensure quality, security and revenue generation. Content owners can contact us for more information on opportunities to expand reach and enhance revenue via distribution on the Skitter.TV platform.
