  • Growing Popularity of Internet VOD is an Opportunity for Telco’s

    Oct 1st 2009

The Diffusion Group (TDG) has released a new research report on TV over-the-top documenting the dramatic shift to on-demand delivery of Internet video.  According TDG,  on-demand delivery to the TV will grow from $621 million in revenue in 2009 to $2.1 billion by 2014, accounting for more than 25 percent of total annual video-on-demand (VOD) revenue.

TDG Senior Partner and digital video expert Colin Dixon says this trend is fueled by  the rapid diffusion of ancillary web-enabled platforms such as game consoles, Blu-ray players, and hybrid set-top boxes. The market penetration of these secondary platforms is widespread and growing.  At the same time,  TVs with embedded broadband support are now starting to enter the market.  These trends set the stage for a rapid uptake of Internet-to-TV video services over the next five years, including both pay-per-view and subscription-based offerings.

In a TDG announcement, Dixon put this trend into perspective of the overall video market, calling it a threat to traditional video delivery. “Most industry estimates predict 2014 U.S. DVD rental revenue will exceed more than $8 billion,” Dixon said. “By that time, OTT video rentals will top $2 billion. If that fails to warn companies like Blockbuster and Time Warner Cable as to the magnitude of this threat, they are asleep at the wheel.”

From Skitter.TV’s perspective, one person’s threat is another’s opportunity.  As more and more consumers switch to Internet-based TV and video as a major source of entertainment, the telecom service provider has an opportunity to take advantage of this new revenue stream by offering converged TV services.

For service providers, the move to Internet video delivery can monetize network traffic while improving customer satisfaction. The research from TDG and others clearly shows that consumers will be using their Internet access to enjoy entertainment.  The service provider can ensure customer loyalty with services that optimize performance and provide a meaningful user interaction with the broad array of TV and video online.  From our point of view, the trend toward Internet-based VOD is a compelling opportunity to for the telecommunications industry. With Skitter.TV, telco’s can implement a video platform that combines live broadcast and satellite TV with video-on-demand with Web video, a distinct advantage that can help achieve more ARPU while reducing customer attrition.

The research clearly shows that customers will increasingly consume Internet video, without or without a revenue stream for the service provider who delivers the Internet.  At Skitter, we’re committed to revolutionizing the business model for TV and video over IP, making this growing channel profitable — especially for Tier Two and Tier Three telco’s — by reducing implementation complexity, time and cost.

  • Skitter, Inc. Partners with NTTC to Provide TV Content Licensing to Telco’s

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:   Skitter, Inc. and the National Telco Television Consortium, LLC, (NTTC) today jointly announced a partnership to provide content licensing, programming services and marketing support to telecommunications service providers using the Skitter.TV video platform.  NTTC will work with Skitter.TV customers to help secure both national and local broadcast and cable content licensing, advise the service provider on TV channel line-up packaging for their unique market demographics, and provide pre- and post-deployment marketing assistance.

The partnership will further Skitter’s commitment to helping telephone companies go to market with broadband TV services quickly with less risk and cost, according to Robert Saunders, Skitter president and co-founder.  “One of the biggest hurdles to a profitable telco TV business model is the cost and complexity of securing content.  What NTTC brings to the table complements and extends our strategy to provide the telecommunications industry with the fastest broadband TV deployment at the lowest risk and cost,” Saunders said.  “With NTTC, Skitter can offer service providers not only access to competitive rates for national broadcast TV and cable programming, but also expert assistance in negotiating local TV rebroadcast licenses and developing attractive entertainment packages to offer their customers.”

NTTC believes its partnership with Skitter will accelerate successful entry into TV-over-IP for telephone companies, according to William Shepherd, CEO and President for NTTC.  “Our role in IP content licensing helps overcome a paramount task for new operators,  while the Skitter.TV platform provides a time-to-market advantage that gets telco’s into the entertainment services business faster–with more content options– than many of the solutions we’ve seen in the past,” Shepherd said.  “Also, access to more and new viewers is good news for content providers, which positions us to negotiate the best rates possible on entertainment content for the telco.  The combination of a scalable video platform, an extended reach for content owners and more households passed for NTTC is really a win-win scenario for everyone.”

On last night’s Emmy Awards broadcast, host Neil Patrick Harris was among several entertainers who weighed in on the impact of Internet TV on traditional broadcast television.  There is clearly much anxiety in Hollywood as Web/TV convergence gathers momentum.

Luckily for Harris, Skitter.TV is here to save the day. With our video platform, video-over-IP performance rivals that of traditional television. And Internet TV moves to the living room, full screen, on your SD or HD television, fully converged with live television broadcasts. With Skitter.TV, it’s not about the end of TV as we’ve known it. It’s the beginning of high-performance, converged entertainment services, and the rebirth of TV choice. Glossy, shiny, gloss-covered television lives on.

Skitter.TV is a Converged Internet Video/TV Solution that Offers Telecommunications Service Providers a Scalable Solution to Encode, Configure and Deliver Entertainment Services

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  September 9, 2009 (Atlanta) — Skitter, Inc. today announced the availability of Skitter.TV,™ video technology to encode, configure, deliver and monetize Internet and broadcast TV services.  Available to consumers through telecommunications service providers, Skitter.TV provides a converged broadband TV experience on computers, televisions, mobile devices and gaming consoles.

Skitter.TV includes head-end hardware and software for integrated Web video, cable network and broadcast TV over IP, delivered via DSL or fiber.  In partnership with service providers, Skitter.TV can also reduce network operations expenses for entertainment companies and content delivery networks (CDNs).  Skitter.TV’s end-user software and program guide offer consumers premium-quality high definition (HD) or standard definition (SD) multiscreen video service that combines linear and on-demand content in a unified, remote- control-driven environment.

Skitter.TV Lowers Barriers to Entry, Raises Service Value for Traditional Telco’s
Skitter.TV gives traditional telco’s an opportunity to compete more successfully, increase revenue and improve customer loyalty with entertainment services, according to Robert Saunders, president of Skitter, Inc.  “What’s different about Skitter.TV is the ability to go to market quickly with a simpler deployment, compared to traditional IPTV.  The service provider can scale up to offer more content to more users as their markets demand,” Saunders said.  “It gives service providers a competitive edge with reduced risk, especially Tier Two and Tier Three telephone companies.  It’s a business model where ROI happens much faster, virtually from day one.

“With Skitter.TV, telco’s can win the race for Internet/TV convergence and address the competitive threats from cable, wireless and other providers that are putting pressure on the traditional telephone business model.”

A Complete Platform to Create, Encode and Deliver Competitive Entertainment Services
The Skitter.TV Internet TV platform consists of head-end video encoding, subscriber management and multistream delivery technology designed to industry standards and optimized for flexibility, efficiency and reliability.  The Skitter Acclaim™ video encoder captures video from multiple sources and encodes into both HD and SD streams simultaneously, in real time.  Service providers can easily include content from broadcast TV, cable networks, Websites such as YouTube™, content delivery networks such as NetFlix® , Hulu,™ and Amazon.com,® as well as live or prerecorded local content.

Once content is encoded, Skitter.TV’s subscriber management technology gives the service provider the tools needed to configure channel lineup and manage subscriber access based on the entertainment service bundles marketed to the consumer.  Skitter.TV can handle virtually unlimited channels and manage multiple service bundles designed and delivered by the service provider.

The Skitter Acclaim™ Video Encoder Breaks New Ground in Real-time SD and HD Streaming
The Acclaim’s wide variety of input formats include 8VSB, QAM, RF, satellite, baseline analog video and others, allowing service providers to encode content from off-air broadcast stations, cable networks, live or tape-delayed local programming and more.  The Acclaim can also be used outside the Skitter.TV environment for service providers and CDNs who want a real-time, dual-stream, small-footprint encoding solution.

“The Acclaim encoder is optimized to offer extraordinary performance at a great value.  It encodes video to a standard MPEG4 AVC stream for simultaneous HD and SD service in real time, compared to many encoders that can take up to a minute for encoding,” Saunders said.  And the Acclaim fits into a single rack unit, while most encoders require two RUs.  That reduces the head-end real estate needed to deploy television over IP.”

Skitter.TV Offers Consumers Converged Internet and TV Content Anywhere
Skitter.TV works on Mac, Windows PC or Linux computers, on Web-enabled smart phones, on popular gaming devices such as the Nintendo® Wii™ and Sony® Playstation® 3, and on Internet TV appliances or traditional TVs connected to an IP-enabled set-top box.  Multiple streams per account are supported simultaneously.

The consumer experiences a sit-back viewing environment driven by remote, bringing a comfortable and familiar TV atmosphere to converged Web video, video-on-demand and traditional TV programming. Skitter.TV’s program guide offers advanced features with no lean-forward, mouse-and-keyboard interaction required.  The program guide allows viewers to set favorites, rename channels, sort content by program type and more, all from a standard remote control.
